Welcome!

Over 4 weeks we offer practitioners from around the world the possibility to explore our pedagogy and philosophy. As an internationally recognized school in the field of devised theatre and performance we have welcomed students from some 60 different countries and dedicate our research to the development of each individual student and your wish to become the artist you wish to be.

Each of our summer school workshops explores a different aspect of the creative process, and all of them have a highly movement-based approach. It is our understanding that no matter whether you are interested in performing, acting, directing, film making, composing, writing or choreographing, whether you work in the performing, healing or educational arts, that it is through the practice of embodiment that you develop a deeper understanding of the ways the world moves (you) and how you would like to move the world.

Our pedagogy is rooted in the movement-based teachings of the late French theatre reformer Jacques Lecoq, and combines rigorous training with a laboratory-style environment which fosters the creative autonomy of our students and the emergence of new performative universes. All our programs have a different emphasis, from an exploration of the practice of embodiment and its role in the creative process to the exploration, deconstruction and performative reinvention of mythological structures and rituals as found in anthropology, shamanic traditions and the teachings of C. G. Jung. Our main goal is to support the individual and collaborative research of our students at the beginning of the 21st century, wherever it takes them. Developing creative autonomy and a strong sense of ownership over one’s own creative practice are cornerstones of our philosophy, and each of the methods and techniques we work with are in support of this goal.

So if you would like to take another step towards widening your creative horizons, join us in the summer. We look forward to meeting you !

WORKSHOPS

Night Sea Journeys 18-22 July 2022

Travelling like the heroines and heroes of all times into the Unknown, crossing shadowlands and descending into underworlds – the mythological motif of the night sea journey is one of the most well-known images for the process of personal individuation and the development of one’s own autonomy through awareness for and embodiment of the Self. The workshop explores the motif through different approaches, from “drifts” into the Unknown in the city of Berlin and the work with masks and myths, to the creation of performative vignettes (video, collage, movement, soundscapes, etc) which explore contemporary approaches to autonomy and our shifting understanding of Self at the beginning of the 21st century.

Meeting the Trickster within 25-29 July 2022

Taking trickster tales and shapeshifter myths from around the world as a point of departure, the workshop explores the archetype of the boundary-crosser, the rule breaker, the  holder of opposites, their role in the creative process and our relationship with her/him/them within ourselves. As a shapeshifter, dream weaver, mythmaker, healer and bringer of chaos and new visions, the trickster and shapeshifter  is a powerful and mysterious presence not only in ancient mythology, but also in our creative process.  Through movement, embodiment, painting, sculpting  and writing, participants will connect with mythological images and stories, but also with their inner trickster.

Our first two workshops give participants an introduction to our 3-year modular MA/MFA and certificate program in Integral Movement and Performance Practice.

Playfulness: Gift of the God/desses 1-5 August 2022

An exploration of the pleasures and delights to connect with our boundless playfulness and imagination as represented in Lalita,  Hindu Goddess of playfulness, Pan,  Greek god of the wild or the archetypal image of the magical child.  From playing outdoor games to animating objects, from imagining to be a fantastical animal  to the embodiment of music, painting and poetry,  from the seriousness of play to playful seriousness, these five days invite you to an experience where the boundaries between what is real and what we imagine do not exist, opening the gates to worlds beyond our rational understanding, waiting already for so long to be discovered and to save us.

The Art of Storytelling 8-12 August 2022

A five-day exploration of movement-based  individual and ensemble storytelling formats, from “platform storytelling” with its cartoon-style images to epic storytelling with its grand emotions, from working with Balinese masks and its typology to the creation of dramatic characters. All the stories during this workshop will be written and devised by the participants themselves, giving priority to the performer as creator of their own work. The workshop will conclude with a presentation of the devised material.

Our second two workshops give participants an introduction to our 1- and 2–year full-time MA/MFA and certificate programs in Devised Theatre and Performance and Embodied Dramaturgy.
