International Summer School 2019

15 July - 09 August 2019

Introduction

We are pleased to announce details of our regular international summer school program for 2019, which will take place over four weeks at the EDEN studios in Berlin.

You can choose which workshops to take part in, and each of the workshops gives you an insight into different aspects of our movement-based pedagogy for performing arts practitioners interested in creating their own work. Whether you are a performer, director, writer for the stage, or a practitioner with a different artistic background – if you are interested in creating original work within a collaborative setting, we hope to offer you an environment for creative practice and encounters with fellow artists from around the world.

The first 2 weeks offer 3 different workshops geared towards an experience of physical theatre, embodiment and the process of collaborative devising in the context of our pedagogical approach, rooted in the teaching of Jacques Lecoq.

The third and fourth weeks of our Summer School offer an introduction to our new program in Integral Movement and Performance Practice. The IMPP program is a completely unique design, linking artistic development and personal process through integration of essential aspects of the Jungian concept for personal growth.

The Poetic Body I

10:00 – 13:15

The workshop invites participants to discover the dynamics of the human imagination through an exploration of the push and pulls within music, painting and poetry through movement, writing and the use of color. The results of this individual and collective experience will then serve as a point of departure for a deeper understanding of the idea of Embodiment and how it can shape our artistic work.

The Poetic Body II

14:45 – 18:00

The workshop takes participants into the city of Berlin itself for a deeper exploration of the dynamic relationship between the human body and her environment, and how this relationship informs our work as artists. Participants will be invited to “drift” in the city and take their somatic experiences as a point of departure for the creation of original work.

Both week 1 and week 2 offer a good introduction to our full-time certificate or Masters Program in Devising Theatre and Performance.

Week 2

The Art of Collaborative Devising

10:00 – 13:15

Devised theatre and performance enjoys rapidly growing popularity within the international performance community. Given these circumstances, it becomes increasingly important to develop an understanding for the dynamics evoked in any collaborative devising process, This workshop explores the art of collaborative devising from different angles and allows for an insight into the personal, artistic and political consequences of this approach. These five days offer beyond others practical exercises, performative experiments, discussion groups and new leadership concepts for a better understanding of the complex matrix of devising. The workshop addresses participants with already existing experience in collaborative devising interested in deepening their own practice.

Ensemble Storytelling

14:45 – 18:00

This workshop will give participants an opportunity to create and share stories in a collaborative way. How do we imagine, write and devise stories together and how do we share them with an audience? Integrating the idea of Embodiment as a way to dialogue with our imagination, our inner stories as well as already-existing stories, participants will be invited to create and re/shape stories through different performative/theatrical languages. This workshop is only open for participants who are also enrolled in the morning workshop.

Both week 1 and week 2 offer a good introduction to our full-time certificate or Masters Program in Devising Theatre and Performance.

Week 3

29 July – 02 August 2019 [1 Week]

Price: 675€

Mask and Myth

10:00 – 16:00

The workshop offers an introduction into the pedagogy of Embodiment and embodied mythology through use of the Neutral Mask. It introduces the different structures of consciousness rooted in the body and how the interplay of these structures play a crucial part in the process of artistic and personal Self realisation. Through mask, myth and movement, painting, sculpting and meditative practices, participants are invited to explore the deeper mythological matrix of our body and the way it structures our creative process in art and life.

The workshop gives a good insight into the 3-year part-time program in Integral Movement and Performance Practice, which is offered by the Thomas Prattki Centre in collaboration with Rose Bruford as an MA program / certificate, and is considered to be an audition workshop for the next cycle of IMPP starting in Feb 2020.

Week 4

Moving into the Shadow

10:00 – 16:00

The workshop offers an introduction to the Jungian concept of the Shadow through mask, myth, movement and ritual. The shadow represents the Unlived life within an individual or an entire society, which has been sacrificed for a personal or cultural ideal. One of the functions of art has always been to raise our awareness for the Unlived and to remind us of the necessity to integrate the shadow into our life. Working with mythological images and themes of the shadow, participants will be invited to look at their own Unlived and to discover pathways towards ownership and transformation of the “Forbidden and Forgotten”. The workshop addresses mature practitioners in the field of movement-based performance, education and performance-based healing practices with experience in personal process work.

This 1-week workshop is only open to those who have completed Week 3, and gives a good insight into the 3-year part-time program in Integral Movement and Performance Practice, which is offered by the Thomas Prattki Centre in collaboration with Rose Bruford as an MA program / certificate, and is considered to be an audition workshop for the next cycle of IMPP starting in Feb 2020.
